Immersive enterprise services need trusted identity, location, consent and assured performance. This Catalyst shows how CSPs can monetize Open Gateway capabilities as outcome-based Spatial Web services for Industry 4.0 environments.

Turning telco networks into programmable Spatial Web infrastructure
The Spatial Web promises a new generation of immersive, location-aware digital experiences, where persistent content can be discovered, accessed and updated in the physical world. But for communications service providers, the opportunity is not simply to provide faster connectivity. It is to expose network capabilities such as identity, consent, location, edge discovery and quality on demand as trusted, programmable services.
The Catalyst project, Spatial web: Open gateway to the immersive future - Phase II, shows how telco networks can become programmable Spatial Web infrastructure. Using Open Gateway and CAMARA APIs, TM Forum Open APIs and the DSSP protocol, the project demonstrates how secure, real-time, location-aware immersive experiences can be delivered across shared enterprise environments.
In the latest Phase II, the project focuses on an airport maintenance scenario, where augmented reality users move from public passenger layers into secure operational layers. Authorized workers can request cross-company access to relevant data in real time, view the right spatially anchored information at the right place and time, and contribute new operational knowledge back into the environment for future teams.
At the heart of the solution is a governed “anchors economy,” in which spatial anchors, identity, consent, location, edge discovery and quality on demand are orchestrated together. These capabilities make it possible for authorized users to discover, access, share, and create persistent digital content tied to physical places, while maintaining auditability and policy control.
The Catalyst uses spatial layers to separate public, restricted, and private information. This ensures that the right digital content is visible only to the right users, in the right location and at the right time. In safety-critical environments such as airports, transport hubs, utilities and industrial sites, that separation is central to operational resilience, safety and service quality.
A key innovation is the Catalyst’s B2B2X Industry 4.0 partnership model. Rather than relying on generic API aggregation, the project positions a specialist Industry 4.0 partner as the orchestrator for the venue. This partner understands operational, safety, and governance requirements, and translates them into consumable, outcome-oriented network and spatial services.
Massimo Banzi, Standards Manager at Telecom Italia, said the Catalyst stands out because it demonstrates how “Industry 4.0 specialists can bridge the gap between CSP network and real-world operational environments using a B2B2X model.” He added that by pairing standardized Open Gateway and TM Forum APIs with spatial computing, the project creates “a credible path toward scalable, trusted Spatial Web services that benefit everyone: operators, enterprises, and society alike.”
To help CSPs participate directly in high-value Industry 4.0 use cases, the Catalyst shows how multiple CAMARA APIs can be packaged into outcome-oriented network products. These include Edge Optimized Sessions, which combine edge discovery and traffic influence to support locality and performance during task execution, and Assured Connectivity Sessions, which combine QoS profiles, Quality on Demand and connectivity insights to deliver time-bound, policy-controlled performance assurance.
This approach allows CSPs to monetize presence, persistence, trust and performance assurance as reusable Spatial Web services, without needing to own venue logic or application development. It also preserves clear boundaries for policy, service-level agreements, and liability, which is essential when multiple companies operate in a shared physical environment.
The project uses TM Forum Open APIs and ODA capabilities including TMF936 Product Catalog Management API for Open Gateway service product modeling, exposure and catalogsynchronization; TMF931 Open Gateway Onboarding and Ordering APIs for onboarding application owners and ordering CAMARA-based service products; and TMF937 Product Usage and Usage Consumption Management API for usage event exposure, charging, settlement and revenue sharing.
It also draws on CAMARA and GSMA Open Gateway APIs including Simple Edge Discovery, Traffic Influence, Connectivity Insights, Quality on Demand, QoS Profiles, Geofencing Subscriptions, Location Verification, SIM Swap, Number Verification and Consent Info. Together, these assets support a standardized model for turning network capabilities into consumable, monetizable services across ecosystem participants.
The commercial rationale is clear. The team points to a rapidly expanding global extended reality market, estimated at around USD 250 billion in 2025 and projected to exceed USD 2 trillion by 2034, driven largely by enterprise adoption in training, operations and industrial workflows. Yet CSPs need practical ways to capture more value from that market than basic connectivity alone.
By bundling Open Gateway and CAMARA capabilities into task-based services such as Edge Optimized Sessions and Assured Connectivity Sessions, operators can create higher-margin offerings tied to business outcomes. GSMA data cited by the team shows Open Gateway APIs now cover about 80% of global mobile users, while business-focused APIs such as Quality on Demand and edge services increased from less than 10% of launches in 2024 to about 25% in 2025.
For enterprises and Industry 4.0 partners, the model enables secure collaboration across organizational boundaries. Authorized workers can access multi-vendor data in real time, request cross-company permissions with full auditability and leave persistent, spatially anchored operational knowledge for future teams. Industry 4.0 partners can also move up the value chain from execution-only services to outcome-oriented digital operations, while consuming network trust and performance as products.
For the wider industry, the Catalyst provides a repeatable B2B2X pattern for industrializing Spatial Web services. It shows how standardized APIs, open architectures and outcome-oriented network products can support collaboration between CSPs, specialized partners, application providers, and venue owners. For society, the same model can improve safety and resilience in shared public environments by ensuring that critical digital information is governed, trusted, and contextually relevant.
At DTW Ignite 2026, the Catalyst showcased how CSPs can turn proprietary network assets into consumable, context-aware services for immersive enterprise experiences. The demonstration highlighted how Open Gateway capabilities, spatial computing and Industry 4.0 orchestration can support trusted access, assured performance and persistent digital content in real-world operational environments.
The project was named a finalist for the Best Moonshot Catalyst – Composable IT and Ecosystems challenge at DTW Ignite 2026, recognizing its work to help CSPs become AI-native, ecosystem-orchestrating platforms that monetize intelligence, trust and network performance beyond connectivity.
